Both soldiers were killed on Aug. 31, in Shkin, Afghanistan, while on patrol when their squad was attacked.

[Adam Thomas], 21, a 10th Mountain Division soldier, was killed Sunday while on combat patrol in eastern Afghanistan in a clash with enemy fighters. The Army said one other American soldier was killed in a fight that lasted more than an hour.

Family tradition caused Pfc. Adam Thomas to join the Army in August 2001 as a teenager.

"We have uncles, aunts and grandfathers who were in the service," said his brother, Jeffrey Thomas of Palos Hills. "It seemed like the right thing to do at the time."

Jeffrey Thomas recalled that his brother "always played with G.I. Joes and acted like an Army boy when he was little."

Adam Thomas, 21, a 10th Mountain Division soldier, was killed Sunday while on combat patrol in eastern Afghanistan in a clash with enemy fighters. The Army said one other American soldier was killed in a fight that lasted more than an hour.

Army officials said they were the first combat deaths in the division, based in Ft. Drum, N.Y., since it was deployed to Afghanistan in October 2001.

Thomas talked to his mother and a sister by telephone on Wednesday, said his brother.

Thomas' brother said one of his grandfathers had served in the Navy in World War II, while another had served in Vietnam. He also had uncles and a cousin who served in the Navy and another cousin had served in the Gulf War.
